Description

This study examined the effect of ownership types on internationalization strategy of small scale business firms in Nigeria. The study investigates specifically the effect of internal ownership type, external ownership type, venture capital on internationalization strategy and also examines the influence of ownership type on financial resources. In order to achieve the broad objective of this study, two hypotheses were raised for validation and a purposive sample of one hundred and twenty (120) samples of small and medium scale enterprises in Ijebu North Local government area of the state was used. The data for the analysis were collected by the researcher through a self structure designed questionnaire. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) regression technique was adopted for the analysis and the result of the estimation was facilitated using the statistical package for social and management sciences (SPSS). From the data analysis, it was at evident that internal ownership type exert a significant negative influence on internationalization strategy while external ownership and venture capital do not significantly and independently influence internationalization strategy. It was also found that an ownership type has significant negative effect financial resources. Among others, the study recommended the need for small and medium scale firms to pursue a well-articulated international competitive strategies (in particular differentiation strategy) to reach new customers in a much larger extent. In addition, managers should minimize the effect of features that will tend to impede their internationalization, such as a domestic perspective, unstructured management processes, and limited networks.
