ABSTRACT

This study examined peer pressure and drug abuse among Ago-Iwoye youth. It specifically examine the extent of drug abuse among youths in Ago-Iwoye, investigate the relationship between peer group pressure and drug abuse among the youths in Ago-Iwoye, it establish gender different in the level of peer pressure influence on drug abuse among youths in Ago-Iwoye and it examined the significant difference in drug use among male and female youths in Ago-iwoye. The study was anchored on two theories: Bandura’s Social Learning Theory and Hirchi’s Social Control Theory. This study adopt descriptive survey research design.

Taro Yamme formula was used to selected a total sample of size of 384 respondents out of the total population of 9716 the study area. Descriptive statistics was employed to analysed the demographic data while Pearson Correlation Analysis was used to study the relationship between the dependent and independent variable while independent sample t-test was used to test the difference. Findings from the study revealed that the extent of drug abuse among youths in Ago-Iwoye is very high; there is statistical relationship between peer group pressure and drug abuse among the youths in Ago-Iwoye; there is gender difference in the level of peer pressure influence on drug abuse among youths in Ago-Iwoye. Findings also showed that there is significant difference in drug use among male and female youths in Ago-iwoye. The study concluded that there was relationship between peer group pressure and drug abuse among the youths in Ago-Iwoye. Youth are in a very important developmental stage of their lives.

The study recommended that preventive health education should be intensified in media to raise youths’ awareness of risks of drug abuse, government should enforce laws to regulate the production and consumption of the local breweries which seem to be the bases where students learn the behaviour of alcohol abuse.
