Description

ABSTRACT
It is obvious that Pidgin English is a language that is lexically derived from other languages but which is structurally simplified especially in their morphology. Pidgin came to being where people needed to communicate but did not have a language in common. Still, the problems created with the use of Pidgin English are still a great one. Therefore, this study analyses the lexical and structural forms of verbs in selected Pidgin English programmes
In an attempt to achieve the aim of this study, radio programmes conducted in Pidgin English titled “This Life Na Je-Je-Episode 9” was selected. After the collection, the Pidgin English contained in the data were analysed lexically and structurally in a tabular form. Also in the analysis, units of English language were also identified. The classes of words include (the morpheme, word, phrase, clause and the sentence). The contributions of various Nigerian Languages to the vocabulary of Pidgin English were identified.
It was discovered that cultural influences from the indigenous languages are important constituents of Nigerian Pidgin English. It clearly showed that Pidgin English is clearly distinct from the English Language, even though the bulk of its initial vocabulary was derived from the English Language.
The study concluded that all things considered- vocabulary, syntax and other linguistic features in Pidgin English are uniquely Nigerian. Given the importance of communication in homes, society, and the country at large, government should make education and awareness programmes available for ethnic cultures that believe pidgin is the only better means of transmitting information either for personal purposes or business purposes.
