Description

The broad objective of this study was to examine the influence of work environment on employee performance. The investigation was imperative because today’s work environment is different, diverse and constantly changing. The typical employer/employee relationship of old has been turned upside down. Workers are living in a growing economy and have almost limitless job opportunities. This combination of factors has created an environment where the business needs its employees more than the employees need the business. From the review of literature and the theoretical framework in chapter two, it is evident that, management’s new challenge is to build a work environment that attracts, retain and motivate its employees. Many workplace factors influence employee’s performance. Relationship among personality, work environment preferences and the outcome variables, performance and commitment affect employee’s performance at the workplace. In order to achieve the broad objective of this study, two hypotheses were raised for validation and the population of all civil servants from which a purposive sample of one hundred and twenty samples of staff of Ijebu North Local government secretariat was used. The data for the analysis were collected by the researcher through a self structure designed questionnaire. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) regression technique was adopted for the analysis and the result of the estimation was facilitated using the statistical package for social and management sciences (SPSS). From the data analysis, it was at evident that working condition has significant positive effect on employees’ performance. It was also found that behavioral procedures, policies and rules of organizations has significant negative effect employees’ performance. Finally, the additional test conducted shows that age and marital status exert a significant influence on employee performance while gender, qualification and experience do not significantly and independently influence employee performance of local government staff in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun state.
