Description

ABSTRACT

Culture bastardarisation in Africa especially by the youth is on the increase and this calls for concern among Yoruba culture of Southern Western Nigeria. One of the major reason that could be the cause of this problem is the proliferation of foreign movies which were not check. In shedding more light to this research, this study adopted Bandura’s Social Cognitive Theory. Within this Social Cognitive Theory is observational learning process which explains that learning of behaviour is done through observing behaviour of another person called a ‘model’. Analysis of the “American Pie”, a foreign film written by Adam Herz and directed by Paul and Chris Weitz, was used to determine the influence of movies on Nigerian youth who are perceived leaders of tomorrow. The result of this analysis showed that majority of Nigerian youth are influenced negatively from watching foreign movie. This does not mean there is no positive influence in watching foreign movie but the negative influence is far more than the positive influence. This study concluded on recommending a way forward towards the restoration and promotion of Yoruba culture.
