Description

Floods occur when a body of water rises to overflow land which is normally not submerged. This study evaluates the causes and effects of perennial flooding in Okota, Isolo local council development area of Lagos and proffer recommendations which will reduce the effect of flood in the area. Primary and secondary data were gathered in this study. Primary data were gathered through interview of relevant stakeholders from the residents of the area and authorities in the local government. A total of 100 questionnaires were administered to the residents of the area to know the causes and effects of perennial flooding in the area. Secondary data were obtained from sources including various relevant publications and textbooks. Rainfall data were sourced from Nigerian meteorological agency (NIMET) Oshodi, Lagos. The result shows that the perennial flooding problem in Okota is as a result of block drainages, lack of proper waste management and lack of drainage systems. Other causes of flood include excessive rainfall, lack of proper planning, effect of climate change and low-lying of the areas. The result shows that the area suffers from infrastructural damage as a result of perennial flooding in the area. The rainfall trend in the area shows a linear increase of y=0.0079×-178.64, where x is month of the year while y is the amount of rainfall. Result also shows that rainfall in Lagos is at its peak in June and July. In a bid to tackle the menace of flooding efforts have to be redoubled to scale-up flood control and management. A number of recommendations were made which include: the constructions of good drainage systems and drainage rehabilitation. The study also recommended enlightenment programmes for residents of the area to increase their level of awareness about the causes, effects and control of flooding.
