Description

The objective of this study is to examine the impact of corruption on economic growth in Nigeria using annual secondary data from 1994 to 2014. This is imperative because corruption has coexisted with human society for a long time and remains as one of the problems in many of the world’s developing economies with devastating consequences. In an attempt to achieve the broad objective of this study, an ordinary least square (OLS) econometric model was formulated to capture the impact of corruption on economic growth in Nigeria. The data for the analysis of the model were collected from secondary sources to include the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Statistical Bulletin and Transparency International. Ordinary least square multiple regression approach was adopted for the estimation of the regression model formulated and the result of the model was facilitated using the Econometric View (E-View). The result of the analysis shows clearly that corruption does not have a significant impact on economic growth in Nigeria. While corruption and debt stock do not have impact on economic growth, unemployment rate exerts a significant positive on economic growth in Nigeria. Among other, the study recommends that, policies that will enhance economic growth are expected to be encouraged in reducing corruption and poverty so that the level of economic growth can be improved.
