Description

ABSTRACT
Sanitary conditions in public places such as bathrooms has always been a major concern to public health departments and they are continually checking the cleanliness and safety of the bacteria breeding places to prevent the spread of sickness and disease. In this study, the quality and quantity of microbes of tiled and cemented bathroom of student’s hostel in Ijebu-north Local Government Area as a public health issues was examined. Forty (40) samples were collected using sterile cotton swab stick moistened with sterile normal saline and analysed for bacteriological contamination. The coliform count in tiled bathroom ranged from 1.2 x 103 to 9.9 x 103. The coliform count in cemented bathroom ranged from 1.6 x 103 to 13.2 x 103. A total of one hundred and thirty six organisms were isolated from the samples collected out of which seventy-two isolates were from cemented bathroom while sixty four isolates were from tiled bathroom. The isolated organisms in cemented bathroom includes Escherichia coli, Proteus sp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus sp and Shigella sp while isolated organisms from tiled bathroom includes Escherichia coli, Proteus sp, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus and Shigella sp. . It is therefore strongly recommended that public awareness and enlightenment campaigns on proper hygiene of bathroom and personal hygiene be intensified within the study area in particular and the general public.
