ABSTRACT
Poor hygiene practices and inadequate sanitary conditions play major roles in the increased burden of communicable diseases within developing countries. Therefore, this study assessed the knowledge and practices of hygiene and sanitation in preventing infectious diseases among residents of Ago-Iwoye community. This descriptive survey research was conducted in Ago-Iwoye community where 368 households were taken as subjects. Structured questionnaire was used to gather information from the participants. Chi-square test was applied to find out the hygienic practices with selected variables. It was revealed that the level of knowledge of hygienic practices will significantly prevent the spread of infectious diseases among the residents of Ago-Iwoye Community. The study showed that available of potable water in dwelling houses will significantly prevent infectious diseases among residents of Ago-Iwoye Community. It also showed that mode of wastes management by the residents of Ago-Iwoye Community will significantly prevent infectious diseases. It was concluded that the knowledge and practices of hygiene and sanitation in preventing infectious diseases among residents of Ago-Iwoye community was be fair. Among other recommendations is that hygiene information campaigns need to be implemented in Ago-Iwoye Community so that the people can be trained in the practice of hygiene and learn the health benefits that will be derived from these practices.
