Description

The objective of the study was to examine the effect of balance scorecard as measure of bank performance in Ogun State, Nigeria. This is imperative because since its creation in 1892, Nigerian banking sector has experienced very turbulent environment due to unstable policies and uncertainty. The failure of some commercial banks to meet up with financial performance after consolidation requires a rethink to evaluate their performance using non-financial measures. In an attempt to achieve the broad objective of the study, four hypotheses were raised in the study for validation and a sample of five commercial banks in Ijebu North Local Government of Ogun State was used in the study. Data for the analysis was collected through the use of a self-structure design questionnaire. The simple percentage method, correlation and ANOVA method was used in the analysis and the result was facilitated using the statistical package for social and sciences (SPSS 20.0). The result of the analysis at 5% level of significance shows that financial perspective measure has a significant positive effect on bank performance. The study also established that customer perspective measure has a significant positive effect on bank performance. The study also established that internal business processes perspective measure has a significant positive effect on bank performance. Finally, the study established that learning and growth perspectives measure has a significant positive effect on bank performance. Among others, the study recommends that banks should implement the balanced scorecard as a performance measurement and strategic implementation tool to improve their operational performance and profitability.
