ABSTRACT
This investigated the relevance of Civic Education as a subject in secondary school for curbing political violence in Nigeria. The specific objective of the study was to examine the relevance of Civic education in the political life of Nigeria students, to identify the roles of Civic education in enlightening the students on the importance of peace in Nigeria, and expose the knowledge level of students on the objectives of Civic education. Two hypotheses were raised and tested in the study.
The research adopted a descriptive research design. The target population consists of the entire students and teachers in secondary school secondary school, Ijebu-North Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria. The sample for the study consist of two hundred and twenty (220) subject that made of up twenty (20) teachers and two hundred (200) students. Descriptive statistics of frequency count and simple percentage was used to analysed the demographic data while Multiple regression analysis of t-test and analysis of variance was used to test the hypotheses.
The findings revealed that Civic Education has a lot of implication on the students Nigerian secondary schools. It showed that Civic Education is relevance in the political life of students. It also revealed that the students believed that Civic Education enlighten the students on the importance of peace in Nigeria. It was concluded that there is no significance difference in the perception of teachers and students on the role of Civic Education in the curbing of political violence in Nigeria. The level of literacy and attachment of male and female students did not differ significantly as a result of exposure to a programme of Civic Education.
Among other recommendations is that politicians should be banned from using secondary school students in their political campaign, otherwise they face the music.
