Description

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of parenting styles and peer pressure on adolescents drug use. The research was carried out on senior secondary school students of Ijebu North and Ijebu-Ode Local government Area. It is known that adolescents have the tendency to involve in drug use, also parenting styles and peer pressure was found to be the factors that influence adolescent’s drug use. Descriptive survey method was adopted (Anova and T-test), with a total population of 200 participants, whom their data was gathered and analyzed based on their responses; with the use of questionnaires. The participants were drawn from two secondary schools in Ago-Iwoye, one in Ijebu-Ode and one in Ijebu-Igbo. The following results were generated from the study. The result shows that parenting styles has significant influence on adolescent drug use. [F (44, 155) = 3.844; P<0.05]. Also, it revealed thatpeer pressure has significant influence on adolescent drug use thereby posited that peer pressure significantly influence adolescent drug use [F (23, 179) = 4.023; p<0.05]. It also shows that there is no significant difference in male adolescent drug use from female adolescent [T (-1.255: df (198); P > 0.05]. The result also revealed that male adolescent will not be more prone to peer- pressure than female adolescent. Sometimes female adolescents may likely be more prone or involve in peer pressure than male adolescent [T (-2.462: df (198); P > 0.05]. Conclusively, this study found that parenting styles has impact or influence on adolescent drug use. Also peer pressure has impact on adolescent drug use. But male adolescent were not reported higher than female adolescent on adolescent drug use. Finally, it can also be concluded that male adolescent are not more prone to peer pressure than female adolescents
