Description

As a result of academic demand in Nigerian Universities, average students find it difficult to know what goes on in a gymnasium or relate positively to activities outside academic program. Majority of students in Nigerian higher institutions do not actively participate in leisure time activities due to some factors such as age, gender, religion, skill level, sport facilities, geographical features. This study therefore tends to investigate the factors hindering university students’ from participating in recreational activities. Three research hypothesis were formulated and tested in the study. The study employed descriptive survey research design. The sample size for the study comprised of four hundred and eighty-three students from five faculties in Olabisi Onabanjo University. Questionnaire was the prime instrument that was use in gathering information from the respondents. The data collected were analysed using simple percentage and chi-square analytical tools. The findings of the study revealed that availability of standard facilities and equipment are inhibiting factors to sports participation by the students’. It also showed that academic stress is a significant inhibiting factor to students’ participation in sports. It was also found that university policy on sports is another factor inhibiting students’ participation in sports. The study therefore recommended that governing councils of universities and government should provide standard facilities and equipment in order to encourage students’ participation in sports.
