Description

This study examines the determination of population growth in Nigeria. The study has surveyed the existing literate on the consequence of rapid population growth on the Nigeria economy. The study made use of secondary data which were sourced from the Central Bank of Nigeria, National bureau of statics, and uniform crime Report Annual Bulletin. The study applied multiple regression analysis to the model specific in the study methodology. Secondary data for the period 1980 to 2012 were used for the study. Among the findings was that negative relationship exists between crime rates (CR) and system of government (SOG) with the coefficient. Also, the regression result shows that minimum wage (MINW), Government expenditure on education (GEEDU), health care services (GEXHE) and other social and community services (GESC) have positive impact on population growth. These findings and recommendations suggest a need to enhance implementation of programmed at the grass-root level. Government should enhance the integration of population variable in socioeconomic development and make policy makers, planner and grass root community agents appreciate the need for harmonized and balanced development activities.
