ABSTRACT

This work critically analysed the revelation of domestic violence in selected film “victim” by Mercy Aigbe. The researcher isolated Nollywood’s (the Nigerian home video industry) themes which portray domestic violence against women. It further ascertain if Nollywood movies portray social reality and find out if Nollywood movies that portray domestic violence will educate the audience.
The study was anchored on three theories: social construction of reality theory, cultivation theory and perception theory. This study applied content analysis of pictures from the selected to identify effort of movie in preventing violence.
It was established that domestic violence start with parents abusing themselves and mother encouring daughter to exort men using different techniques. However, this does not encourage anyone, be it men or women to take laws into their hand by killing perpretrators of domestic violence. It was also found that movie enlighten audience on the negative impact of domestic violence.
The study recommend that producers and writers should be encouraged to continue to educate audience with movie that will stop violence against women as this will prevent and eradicate domestic violence in home and also enlighten the public on the need to stop domestic violence against women.
